Eleocharis acicularis, commonly known as dwarf hairgrass or needle spikerush, is a widely distributed perennial sedge that can grow submerged or in waterlogged habitats. It produces numerous very fine, upright, bright-green stems that create a natural grass-like appearance when planted in groups.
In aquariums it is mainly used in the foreground or midground and generally reaches 6–15 cm, depending on lighting and growing conditions. It is hardy and adaptable but performs best in an open position without shading. Suitable lighting, nutrients in the substrate and a stable CO₂ supply encourage faster spreading and a denser carpet.
Stems can be trimmed with scissors when they exceed the desired height. Remove ageing leaves and thin out excessively dense areas so that light and water circulation can reach the base. After a heavy trim, the plant may need a few days to regain its upright appearance.
